Fantasy Vezina Winner – The Top 5

The hockey goaltender position is one of the most pressure filled positions in sports. It can also be one of the most point yielding fantasy positions when it comes to FanDuel hockey. This is one of those sports where one player can steal a game on any given night and if you have that person in your line-up, you’re already way ahead of the competition.

Take the lowly Oiler’s netminder, Ben Scrivens for example. Last season, the San Jose Sharks made their up to Edmonton to take on the Oilers. On paper, this game was a complete mismatch, San Jose finished tied for 2nd in the West with 111 points while Edmonton finished dead last in the West with 67. Easy win for SJ, right? Wrong. The Oiler’s won the game by a score of 3-0. Scriven’s had 59 saves with a shutout. A performance like that is good for 16.8 FanDuel points, which be enough to beat some folks in a H2H.

By no means am I saying you should start Ben Scriven’s every night, because you shouldn’t. But following this guide for the top 5 tenders, who will give you the best chance to find the goalie that has a big game.

5.) Braden Holtby – 32-16-9, 2.15 GAA, .925 SV%

Only one other goalie in the league has had 57 starts, like Holtby. He has been the definition of a rock back there and is tied for 2nd in the league with 7 shut-outs on the season. Playing in the high scoring East, Holtby has been a pleasant surprise for Washington this season.

4.) Marc Andre Fleury – 30-14-7, 2.14 GAA, .925 SV%

“Flower,” has been having a very nice season for the Pen’s, who have been hit with the injury bug to their defensemen all season. He leads the league with 9 shutouts, which is a nice 2 point bonus in FanDuel games. He has started 52 games this season and Pen’s fans are really hoping this translates to the playoffs.

3.) Devan Dubnyk – 28-9-2, 2.11 GAA, .928 SV%

Yes, that’s right, the same Devan Dubnyk who was run out of Edmonton, Montreal and Nashville before landing in Phoenix this year and ultimately being traded to Minnesota. Since he arrived in MN, he has started 25 consecutive games and has posted a 19-4-1 record with an insane .937 SV% and a 1.67 GAA. Combine that with is handful of starts in Phoenix and he is putting up Vezina like numbers. The 6 shutouts don’t hurt either.

2.) Pekka Rinne – 36-13-3, 2.11 GAA, .927 SV%

Rinne is considered by many to be the main reason for the Pred’s resurgence. He has stayed relatively healthy throughout the year with a few exceptions and when he has been in the crease, he immediately gives the Pred’s a chance to win. He does not have a ridiculous number of shutouts by any means but every other stat is near the top of the league.

1.) Carey Price – 37-13-4, 1.87 GAA, .937 SV%

This guy is from another planet. He has had the most ridiculous stretch for a goalie in recent memory. As you can see above, his stats are not human and he seems to be improving throughout the season. If you can afford him the fantasy world, he is almost a sure thing to provide a nice stat line. And with 7 shutouts on the season, there is a slight chance he can put up double digit FanDuel points.
