The QB Conundrum

Now that the combine is over, it seems certain that former Florida State quarterback Jameis Winston has cemented himself as one of the best prospects on the field.  The Tampa Bay Buccaneers look poised to take him with the number 1 overall pick in the draft as long as they feel his troubles off the field won’t be an issue once he makes it to the NFL.  There’s no doubt the Buccaneers need quarterback help.

They recently released one of their free agent signings of last year, Josh McCown, after he had a very subpar season.  This leaves the Buccaneers with only one quarterback on the roster that has any potential, Mike Glennon.  So it seems certain the Buccaneers will be picking up a player this offseason to help lead their offense.

The other top picks in the draft are very much up for discussion.  The consensus seems to be that the Tennessee Titans will be drafting the very talented former USC defensive lineman Leonard Williams.  But it could also be argued that the Titans need to draft a quarterback as well, which leaves them to take Marcus Mariota if Tampa were to pick up Winston.  Rumor has it that the Titans feel comfortable with letting Zach Mettenberger be their quarterback of the future.

The 3rd, 4th, and 5th picks in this draft are all owned by teams that are said to be set at the quarterback position.  The Jacksonville Jaguars picked up Blake Bortles from UCF and the Oakland Raiders selected the former Fresno State quarterback Derek Carr in last year’s draft.  The Washington Redskins seem content to find out if Robert Griffin III can provide the spark he did back in 2012 when he lead the team to a division title as a rookie.

Overall, this puts the New York Jets in a very tough position.  They are slated to have the 6th overall pick in the draft and they need to decide whether they want to add a quarterback or stick with what they have.  I feel as though Geno Smith played well enough in the last month of the season to warrant a second look by the team.  But it seems as though they will be looking to add more talent in that area. Even if the Titans were to pass on Mariota there is still very little guarantee that he will fall to the Jets.  Because Chip Kelly has a much larger say in the player personnel of the Eagles, there is reason to believe they will make a push to move into the top 5 to get Mariota before the Jets have a chance to do so.  Chip Kelly has been running a very similar offense in the NFL to the one that he ran when he was the coach of the Oregon Ducks.

This draft is shaping up to be an exciting one.  More so because there is no player that’s a lock to be taken at any position.  There are so many possibilities for each of the team picking in the top 5 of this draft.  It will be interesting to see how the mock drafts and predictions process as it gets closer to draft day.
