Top 5 Most Valuable NHL Forwards

With about 15-20 games left in the NHL season, we are at the point where we know who is going to deliver each night and who is going to be the scapegoat. So far in the 2015 NHL season, we have seen an enormous lull in scoring. There is not a single player in the league on pace to score 90 points but with the resurgence of a few player’s defensive games, we can make a pretty dynamic list of the top 5.

#5 Nicklas Backstrom

Similar to Malkin below, Backstrom has always been overshadowed by the flashiest player in the league, Alexander Ovechkin. I guess you could say it has been quiet but Nicklas Backstrom has 69 points in 67 games, good for 3rd in the league in points. He is tied with Ovechkin in points and a single point behind the leader in the Art Ross race.

#4: Jakub Voracek

Typically, if we were talking Philly, the focus would be on Claude Giroux but not this time. His linemate, Jakub Voracek is having his best season to date and his currently sitting at 66 points along 61 PIM. Remember, fanduel does give 1 point for a minor penalty, so he is a decent option every night.

#3 Johnny Tavares

Johnny T. has quietly reached his way to the top of the Art Ross trophy race and leads the league with 70 points. He has 27 power play points, good for 5th in the league. His resurgence is well accepted by the hockey community as he overcame a bad injury sustained during the Olympics last year.

#2: Evgeni Malkin

Malkin has always been the bridesmaid, not the bride. But with Sid only having 21 g’s and 45 a’s at this point in the season, “Gino” has 28 goals and 39 assists (67 points) along with 60 PIM. He is at a PPG pace with having only played 60 games and playing with the best overall player in Sid can’t hurt either.

#1 Alexander Ovechkin

The “Great-8,” has had one of his best seasons to date. He isn’t going to put up 100 points, but he is currently sitting at +12 on the season and is 2nd in the league with 69 points. FanDuel does take into account +/- as a stat, while he isn’t near the top of the league in this stat, he is by no means a +/- liability like he was last year. He also leads the league in shots with 328, 70 more shots than the next closest and also in PP goals, of which are FanDuel recognized stats.

Honorable Mentions

I feel bad leaving Patty Kane and Seguin off the list but with their injuries, they haven’t been able to put up the numbers. If they would have stayed healthy, they would both find a place on this list. Also, shout-out to Steve Downie, who is 2nd on ESPN standard scoring leagues thanks to his 191 PIM.
